During this year’s A to Z Challenge, I am writing about my latest novel, Escape Plan by giving you all little snippets about the characters, inspiration, and lessons learned while writing my third novel.

Weldon Curran is a fairly minor character in the Overlook series, but he is an important character. He is married to Stacia Tate Curran and is her moral compass throughout the novels. When Stacia’s life starts to spin out of control, he reels her in.

Weldon was an interesting character to write. The novels are set in 1976 in North Carolina and Weldon is an African-American man married to a white socialite, so it would have been easy to fall prey to stereotypes and cliches. I worked hard to not make race the one thing that defines their relationship. I do address it and include enough backstory to explain how their marriage came to be accepted by both their families but didn’t dwell on it. They came together when they were both grieving the death of Weldon’s sister. She had been Stacia’s best friend and had died in the car crash that left Stacia severely injured. That being said, I was surprised by how many of the early reviewers of the novels focused on Weldon’s race.
