During this year’s A to Z Challenge, I am writing about my latest novel, Escape Plan by giving you all little snippets about the characters, inspiration, and lessons learned while writing my third novel.
Quentin Tate is a relatively minor character in both Overlook and Escape Plan, yet plays an important role in Stacia’s (the second lead character) plot line. Stacia is struggling to figure out what her role in Magnuson society is in the face of changing times. The Tate family has always been one of the important families in the city and Stacia sees it as her responsibility as a Tate to influence everything that happens in Magnuson. Quentin is Stacia Tate Curran’s cousin and acts as a contemporary voice of reason. When Stacia wants to force her way into the big political issues of the city, he tells her to back off. He encourages her to reconsider her imperious impulses and think about how her actions would affect the family.
Quentin is a southern gentleman which doesn’t mean he is not as ruthless as his cousin. The Tate’s made their fortunes buying and developing land. Quentin continues that family tradition by buying and selling real estate. He’ll smile and make a transplant from the north feel welcome while he doubles his money selling them a house. He is in the pocket of the local bankers and knows which houses will be going on the market before anyone else, so he can scoop up the listings first. Quentin was raised to be a pillar of the community, but he acts upon that charge in a very different way than Stacia.
