In How To Climb The Eiffel Tower, Lara Blaine, the MC, suffers from severe social anxiety. Although she is the best analyst in her department and has been there for seven years, no one in the office knows her. She comes in before anyone else, hides in her cubicle in the corner, and leaves after everyone has left. She further distances herself from her co-workers by not learning their names. Instead, she gives them nicknames like Garlic Breath, Short Red Head, Bald Guy, and Pathetic Dog Owner. Garlic Breath sits in the cubicle next to Lara and taunts her through the common wall. As much as it hurts her feelings that he and Pathetic Dog Owner make fun of her, their behavior fits her world view. She is used to being seen as an object and feels most comfortable objectifying her co-workers as well. Connection is too risky. She might be hurt.

Do you know anyone like Lara? Do you label people or put them in a mental box when you meet them? Do you really take the time to get to know the people you interact with?
